This series takes questions from the “Proust Questionnaire” and gives them a theatrical spin. (For more information and to see the full questionnaire click here)
Today we pose 10 questions roughly based on the famous Proust Questionnaire to Sheila Shaffer – the Director of ‘night Mother now playing at the theatre through February 21st. Sheila has been involved with the Coaster Theatre both on and off stage for the last 13 years and ‘night Mother marks her 10th show she has directed at the theatre.
10 QUESTIONS WITH SHEILA SHAFFER
1. What is your present state of mind?
Elated and sad. Elated that ‘night Mother has been so well received. Sad because I will miss the rehearsal process and sharing time with all the wonderful folks that pulled the show together.
2. Who are your favorite playwrights?
The ones that come into my head at the moment are Tina Howe, Christopher Durang, Lapine/Sondheim, Arthur Miller, & Tennessee Williams. The list may change again next week….
3. Your favorite musician?
That’s complicated. My tastes vary so widely from CSNY to Sondheim, REM to Bruno Mars, Fleetwood Mac to Collective Soul, Miles Davis to The Roches.
4. Who are your favorite characters?
In fiction or real life? Because I gotta tell ya there are plenty of characters in real life that should be in a book or a play. You just can’t make some of this stuff up! In fiction…anyone that will make you laugh and remind you there’s good in the world, like Winnie the Pooh. And Xena, Warrior Princess!!!
5. Who are your heroes in real life?
My Dad. He has gentle strength, great talent and a huge heart.
6. What natural gift would you most like to possess?
I wish I could write! Though I have yet to sit down and try. There’s too many stories in my brain I should put down on paper.
7. What is your most marked characteristic?
Organization (whether you call it being tidy or OCD) and my humor. (I’m a Leo/Virgo cusp so that makes me an anal retentive drama queen!)
8. What do you most value in your friends?
Kindness, sincerity, brutal truth, and love.
9. If you could be anyone throughout history, who would you have been?
Carol Burnett….. boom!
10. What is your motto?
“Don’t expect and you won’t be disappointed. Just go with the flow. And if it happens you’ll be pleasantly surprised.” OR “Life is what happens while you’re busy making plans.”
