It started as a roller skating rink. But nearly 45 years ago, a bit of community magic was infused into the building in downtown Cannon Beach, and it became transformed as the Coaster Theatre Playhouse in 1972.
Since then, we have been the scene of memorable plays featuring the area’s talented volunteer actors and singers. The theatre has also hosted musical performances, lectures, local forums and children’s acting camps.
To launch our 45th Season in 2017, we are opening our doors from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 22 in the theater, 108 N. Hemlock St.
“This will be an opportunity for those who haven’t been to the theatre in awhile or who have never been inside it to check it out,” said Patrick Lathrop, executive director. “It’s also our chance to say thank you to our long-time supporters and volunteers.”
Complimentary light bites, fruit, wine and soft drinks will be served. Performances, lasting a few minutes each, will be offered throughout the two hours. Performers will include Coaster actors Jean White Rice; David Sweeney; Lisa Fergus; and Coaster Kidz, Parker and Holly Fergus. Tours of the theatre also will be conducted.
The open house will be a kick-off for the theatre’s “Take-A-Seat, Preserve the Playhouse” campaign. Funds raised from the campaign will go to replace the creaky, springy seats that can distract from a theatre or concert experience with more comfortable, state-of-the-art seats. A sample of the new seats will be available at the open house.
Donations also will help to “refresh” the theatre with new curtains, carpet, interior paint and other touches.
See you Sunday!
